Kimi Antonelli, 20, is one race from the title: Mercedes' bet on a young leader
Kimi Antonelli leads the 2026 Formula 1 championship on 365 points, 123 clear of his Mercedes teammate George Russell, with five races left. He has won nine of the season's 18 races. A top-nine finish at the Mexico City Grand Prix this weekend would make the 20-year-old the youngest champion in the sport's history and Italy's first since 1953.

At a glance: WCRC Leaders' assessment: Antonelli's season is the clearest case in world sport this year of an organisation backing youth and being repaid. Mercedes promoted him straight from junior racing to replace a seven-time champion. Half the races won and a 123-point lead show the bet was planned, not lucky. The leadership lesson is about how the team built around him.

| 2. George Russell (Mercedes) | 242 |
| 3. Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) | 241 |
| 4. Max Verstappen (Red Bull) | 236 |
| 5. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) | 233 |
| 6. Lando Norris (McLaren) | 211 |
| Constructors' championship | Points |

| 1. Mercedes | 607 |
| 2. Ferrari | 474 |
| 3. Red Bull and McLaren (tied) | 355 |
What Antonelli needs in Mexico
Antonelli won the United States Grand Prix last weekend to stretch his lead to 123 points. With five races left, he needs to finish in the top nine in Mexico City to put the title beyond reach. Only Russell and Hamilton can keep the championship alive, and only by winning. If he misses out, the next chance comes in Brazil the following weekend.
The bet Mercedes made
Mercedes chose Antonelli to replace Lewis Hamilton, the team's most successful driver, when Hamilton left for Ferrari. It was one of the biggest calls in the sport: a teenager straight from junior categories in a car built to win titles.
Two seasons on, Mercedes leads the constructors' table by 133 points and has the top two drivers in the championship. Both of its drivers are scoring, which is what wins constructors' titles and the prize money that comes with them.
The leadership view: how a team grows a leader
WCRC's leadership parameters give a useful frame. Antonelli's season shows a high Impact Index (results when it counts) and Resilience Factor (recovering from setbacks across a long calendar). But the larger leadership story belongs to the team. Team principal and co-owner Toto Wolff staked his credibility on a driver with no top-level record. That is Vision Quotient: seeing a future before the data proves it.
The Guru Management Codex offers two fitting models. Make-It-Your-Own Belonging is about helping people feel they belong; a 20-year-old leading a team of experienced engineers needs exactly that. SeeClear, separating fact from projection before a major decision, is how a team picks a teenager over proven veterans: on evidence from junior racing and simulator data, not on reputation.
The brand view
A young champion changes a team's brand. Read through WCRC's MegaBrands lens, which looks at positioning and recall, consumer trust and digital soundness, Mercedes moves from the team of the Hamilton era to the team of the next generation. In the terms of WCRC's Future Readiness Compass, which asks whether a brand is positioned for the next five years, a 20-year-old champion is as future-ready as a sports brand gets.
Formula 1 gains too. A first Italian champion since 1953 brings one of the sport's oldest audiences back to the front, and the youngest-ever champion is a story that reaches far beyond racing fans.
The WCRC View
Antonelli's title, when it comes, will be remembered as a driver's achievement. It should also be studied as an organisation's: Mercedes replaced a legend with a teenager, built the team around him and was repaid with half the season's wins. For boards facing succession decisions, it is a reminder that backing young leadership works when the system around the leader is built to help them succeed.
