Global Emerging PowerLeaders 2026

Vipul Gupta, Executive Director of The Metropolitan Hotel & Spa: Why He Bet the Hotel on Going It Alone

When The Metropolitan Hotel & Spa parted ways with Nikko International Hotels, Executive Director Vipul Gupta could have handed the property to another global chain. He chose to run it independently in one of India's toughest hotel markets. Two decades on, the New Delhi five-star deluxe hotel has completed 25 years as a profitable brand of its own.

Few executives can say they have been part of every chapter of their company’s story. Vipul Gupta can. Over the 25 years of The Metropolitan Hotel & Spa in New Delhi, he has been involved in conceptualising the hotel, opening it, building it into a brand, managing its revenue and, most recently, leading its transformation through a full makeover. “This whole journey has been the most rewarding,” he says, “wherein I have learnt through dealing with people from all walks of life.”

Mr. Gupta completed his Master of Business Administration at the University of Southern California in the early 1990s.

The hotel has collected numerous awards for hospitality excellence along the way. But the achievement Gupta is proudest of is simpler: The Metropolitan has reached its 25th year, and the customers, associates, employees and stakeholders connected to it are, in his words, “happy to be part of our brand.”

For that record, the WCRC Leadership Intelligence Unit has selected Vipul Gupta as a Global Emerging PowerLeader in World’s Best Indians 2026, its recognition of Indian-origin leaders building businesses of consequence.

The decision that made the brand

The defining moment came when The Metropolitan transitioned away from Nikko International Hotels, its management company. Gupta faced what he calls a major strategic crossroads: merge with another international management chain, or build an independent presence in the fiercely competitive Delhi market.

He chose independence. “I chose to take the challenge head-on and run independently,” he says. “Today, two decades later, we operate as a thriving, profitable brand that has successfully carved out its own unique niche alongside global hotel chains.”

It is a rare position in Indian luxury hospitality. As the biggest international brands have arrived in the capital, The Metropolitan has held its ground as a standalone hotel with a loyal following. Gupta’s goal is to keep it that way: to keep competing with the largest names in Delhi and to keep building the hotel’s own niche, one returning guest at a time.

“The ultimate test of a Hotel Director’s leadership isn’t how well the property runs while they are there; it’s how seamlessly it operates when they step away.”

A father’s legacy, carried forward

The Metropolitan was founded by Gupta’s father, the late Mr. Satya Pal Gupta, who built the hotel on timeless tradition, attention to detail and flawless personal service. Gupta says he owes his success to him, and the mission, vision and core values his father set 25 years ago remain unchanged. “These were critically important to the hotel’s culture and growth,” he says. “We are proudly carrying his legacy forward.”

Carrying a legacy forward has not meant standing still. Over the years the hotel has been re-equipped as the industry evolved, in technology, in guest expectations and in its amenities. A major overhaul took place in 2010, around the Commonwealth Games, and the recent makeover has given the property a new chapter.

Gupta describes his own contribution as a blend: his father’s traditional “high-touch” luxury combined with modern “high-tech” operational intelligence. Smart technology and process improvements lift the guest experience and ease friction for staff, while the personal warmth that defined the hotel from its first day stays at the centre.

Standing up for the industry

“I’ve always believed that strong leadership requires standing up for the industry, even when others stay silent,” Gupta says. When a new excise policy threatened the long-term sustainability of the hospitality sector, and major hotel chains accepted it quietly, he partnered with a select group of independent hoteliers to take the case to government officials and press for a review.

“Through persistent efforts, strategic dialogue, and sheer perseverance, we successfully got the policy repealed,” he says. He continues to work with peer industry leaders to advocate for the hospitality fraternity and build resilience across the sector.

Keeping every job through Covid

The hardest test of Gupta’s 25 years arrived in 2020. When Covid-19 was declared a pandemic, hospitality and travel were among the worst-hit industries, and hotels stayed shut for long stretches. “Didn’t know how to cope with it or even get out of the situation,” he recalls. Keeping operations running on limited resources looked close to impossible.

The Metropolitan came through, and it did so without letting its people go. “We retained our employees when most of the hotels were in the process of lay-off,” Gupta says. His approach in any crisis is the same: put safety and operational stability first, adapt quickly, and keep communication calm, transparent and frequent with guests and staff alike.

Today, he says, the hotel is not only thriving but growing. “It is not easy to survive in a tough competition in Delhi, but we, a standalone independent hotel, are not only thriving but also growing and outperforming chain hotels post Covid.”

Growing leaders from within

Gupta describes his style as transformational leadership, built on adaptability and modern hospitality standards, and he names inclusive growth as a principle he will not compromise on: developing talent internally and building an equitable, high-trust workplace.

His mentoring rests on trust and radical candour, with real-time, actionable feedback so that every team member knows where they stand. Succession, for him, “isn’t a static chart in HR; it’s an active talent pipeline.” Every department head is expected to develop a successor, and internal mobility comes first. “When team members see their peers rising from line staff to supervisors and department heads, it creates a culture of loyalty, high engagement, and shared ambition across the entire property.”

Behind that sits a deliberate people culture: continuous improvement, accountability and ownership, recognition and rewards, and an HR team that gathers employee feedback, analyses it and acts on it. Gupta believes a better work-life balance is what keeps people with a company for the long term.

Luxury with a conscience

Gupta’s leadership spans sustainable hospitality operations as much as service. The hotel’s environment programme, EcoMET, draws on both ancient Vedic thinking and modern science, and is certified to ISO 14001:2004, the international environment management standard. It runs on three Rs, reduce, reuse and recycle, through the hotel’s policies, procedures, systems and equipment, and employees are encouraged to carry the message home to friends and family.

The aim, he says, is to promote responsible luxury to guests “without compromising on their unparalleled experience at the five-star deluxe hotel.” The work extends beyond the hotel’s walls through MET REACH, its CSR programme, which supports underprivileged communities through socio-economic, educational and health initiatives and takes part in animal welfare and environmental protection, working closely with NGOs and charitable organisations.

What comes next

Gupta’s vision for the next three to five years is to drive sustainable profitability while building a lasting legacy of responsible hospitality. The Metropolitan is scouting opportunities to expand the brand or launch sub-brands, and the next new avatar of the hotel is already in the pipeline for when the property calls for it.

The leaders the industry needs by now, he argues, combine technological fluency with deep human empathy and the agility to handle fast-changing markets, without losing the human warmth at the core of hospitality. He builds those qualities in his own team by adopting new operational tools, encouraging continuous learning and keeping lines of communication open at every level. For himself, he treats learning as a business discipline, seeking 360-degree feedback from senior mentors and studying guest behaviour as closely as industry trends. “Unlearning outdated practices is just as vital to my leadership as mastering new ones.”

Why he was selected

The WCRC Leadership Intelligence Unit selected Vipul Gupta as a Global Emerging PowerLeader – World’s Best Indians 2026 for leading The Metropolitan Hotel & Spa as an independent, profitable brand for two decades alongside global chains; for keeping his workforce intact through the pandemic; for standing up for the hospitality sector on excise policy; and for a model of responsible luxury that pairs five-star service with certified environmental practice and community programmes.

In his own words, ethical grounding “comes from doing what’s right when no one is watching.” Twenty-five years in, that is the standard The Metropolitan is still run by.

In his own words

What is your mission as a leader?

“To meet the guest expectations and to enable them to have various experiences within the hotel is my primary goal. We are here to make the customer experience better, to make our customers want to come back and drink coffee or eat at our restaurants, or book again at our hotel. As a leader I want the hotel to continue to thrive as a brand, compete with the biggest brands that have come to Delhi, and continue to create our niche with loyal customers.”

What does your leadership stand for beyond revenue?

“Beyond top-line revenue, my leadership stands for authentic hospitality, integrity, and fostering a true sense of belonging for both guests and employees. I want a workplace where every staff member feels safe, supported and invested in.”

How do you stay grounded as your influence grows?

“To me, scaling influence means expanding accountability, not distance. I maintain authenticity by keeping clear, honest communication across all levels to stay approachable and accountable. I feel true ethical grounding comes from doing what’s right when no one is watching.”
