GGEPIL: Turning India's Industrial Waste into Energy, Resources and a Cleaner Future

For more than 25 years, Green Gene Enviro Protection and Infrastructure Limited has been changing how Indian industry sees waste: not as a burden to be buried, but as a resource to be recovered.

Every industrial economy produces waste. What sets India’s leaders in environmental infrastructure apart is what they do with it. For Green Gene Enviro Protection and Infrastructure Limited (GGEPIL), the answer has always been clear: waste is a resource.

Established in 1999 as the first private sector environmental infrastructure company promoted by the Luthra Group, GGEPIL was given a mandate to plan, design and develop sustainable environmental infrastructure in India. Today, led by Chairman Mr. Girish Luthra and Managing Director Mr. Dhruv Luthra, it is an end-to-end partner for around 10,000 industrial clients, converting hazardous industrial waste and legacy municipal waste into alternate fuels and raw materials for cement kilns at industrial scale. Its mission is to provide science-based, legally compliant and scalable environmental solutions that protect public health while transforming the way industry operates.

Twenty-five years of firsts

GGEPIL’s record is built on a series of first-of-their-kind milestones in India:

  • 2003: Gujarat’s first Common Hazardous Waste Incinerator Facility, and India’s first facility for heavy-metal waste solidification.
  • 2005: The first facility with trained personnel for asbestos-containing material.
  • 2009: India’s first Alternate Fuel Preparation Facility, with trial runs.
  • 2011: Gujarat’s first Common Hazardous Waste Management Facility with waste-to-energy.
  • 2023: India’s first large-scale Purified RDF facility, processing 4,400 TPD of legacy municipal solid waste.

Behind each milestone is the same ambition: to move beyond “end-of-pipe” disposal towards integrated, technology-enabled circular solutions. Over this period GGEPIL has managed millions of tonnes of hazardous waste and become a pioneer in large-scale alternate fuel generation.

One partner for every waste stream

GGEPIL describes itself as a “Preferred Waste Manager”, offering transportation, treatment, storage, disposal, pre-processing and co-processing under one roof. Its distinctive role is to bridge waste generators and cement co-processors. Its portfolio covers:

  • Hazardous waste management: common integrated facilities along with TSDF, incineration and pre-processing plants.
  • Alternate fuel and raw material (AFR): standalone pre-processing facilities supplying AFR to cement kilns.
  • Legacy municipal waste: Purified RDF from legacy dumpsites.
  • Water: common effluent treatment plants that recycle textile effluent into reusable water.
  • Eco-industrial parks, site remediation and safe ship recycling.

Its clients span chemicals, textiles, engineering, steel, pharmaceuticals, automotive, petrochemicals, FMCG, oil exploration and thermal power, with the cement industry as the major user of its alternate fuels.

“Transforming hazardous waste into energy and resources at scale, with zero residue and zero long-term environmental liability.”

Innovation, from recipes to real-time tracking

GGEPIL’s three patents and more than 1,800 waste recipes are what allow it to turn highly varied industrial waste into fuel of uniform specification. Around this core it has adopted proven global technologies. Digital systems were adopted just as early. GGEPIL was the first to use GPS-tracked dedicated vehicles for waste transport, and the first in India to run waste processing on SAP S/4HANA ERP and on the Benchmark Gensuite EHS platform. The result is zero landfill, zero incineration residue and full traceability, turning waste management, in the company’s words, “from a cost and compliance burden into a technology-driven, climate-positive value proposition.”

Accountability as a brand

GGEPIL lets its numbers speak: tonnes of fossil fuel replaced, emissions avoided, waste diverted from landfill and compliance assured. ISO-certified processes, digital tracking and steady engagement with regulators and communities support that record. Four values guide the company: the circular economy, environmental stewardship, responsible innovation, and community welfare. Its CSR work in healthcare, education and local employment is focused on the regions that host its facilities.

The road ahead

GGEPIL sees circular economy adoption and stricter regulation as the forces that will define its industry. Over the next three to five years it plans to expand alternate fuel capacity, increase use of RDF, add new eco-industrial parks and modern water treatment plants, bring IoT automation to its sites, and further digitise waste logistics and ESG reporting.

Artificial intelligence will support predictive waste management, compliance tracking and safety, but the company is clear about its place: “Technology, in our model, enhances trust and transparency rather than replacing human responsibility.”

It is a fitting direction for a company that, for more than a quarter of a century, has been protecting the future by giving India’s waste a second life.
